Spotlight: Dayami Hayek

Paul Zimmerman: How did you get interested in art?

Dayami Hayek: There is no Cuba without art, we can’t breath without art, music, colors, so I was born wanting to design and paint , to sing and dance and all the artistic disciplines, because that is what I am.

PZ: What is the most challenging aspect of your work?

DH: I want to be in every museum of the world so that new generations can see, think and feel my work, so that they don’t repeat our mistakes. I am painting g to leave a trace in our world, because what is most important for me and what worries me in the earth we inherited from our kids.

PZ: What is your artistic process? How do you create your paintings?

DH: Is a long process from observation to sculpture, pieces are hand made and I use many diferent materials which I select according the theme of the painting, I respect the drying processes and I mix all the materials to create a Dynamic painting that I baptized as DYNAMIC ART.

PZ: Do you have any particular goal in mind when your start a new piece?

DH: Express myself using three items and be able to get to the people’s heart.

PZ: How do you know when the painting is finished?

DH: They are never finish, there is always a little detail to correct but what it make us perfect is our imperfections, so I apply the same rule to my paintings.

PZ: Has your practice changed over time?

DH: It’s impossible to achieve perfection, but practicing and working hard, we active the excellence.

PZ: Which artists are you most influenced by?

DH: I created DYNAMIC ART, to paint in my own way, I don’t have any special artist who influenced my work but when it comes to admiration. I like Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali y Omar Pinargote.

PZ: How would you define art?

DH: Art is Love. Love is indefinable.

PZ: What are you working on now?

DH: I am working in painting about the preservation of bees, once they are gone, nature will be over.

PZ: How does the pandemic influence your work and sensibility?

DH: I painted about it way before it started, the only good part about it is that I profit to create a lot of paintings when the lockdown started. If you dig in my work you will see the pandemic situation that the world is unfortunately living now.
