“Everything starts in my dreams…”

Paul Zimmerman in conversation with Marta Promińska

Paul Zimmerman: How did you develop interest in art?

Marta Prominska: I didn’t. Art has developed an interest in me. I feel only as a tool to convey specific content and emotions seen in hypnagogic word.

PZ: What is the most challenging aspect of your work?

MP: The most challenging aspect is to translate my visions into canvas. The biggest challenge is not a painting technique itself, but to find the way of communicating the emotions to the viewer and its intensity. The way of interpretatiing the content is not as important as the need to convey a feeling or impression.

PZ: What is your artistic process? How do you create your paintings?

MP: Everything starts in my dreams. My art is a direct reflection of my dreams, visions, the world “between”. I am only the tool, a medium that places a specific message on the canvas. During the artistic process I often use models, study nature, make a lot of notes in my sketchbook. I choose the colors and arrange the composition of the artwork referring to the golden ratio of the great masters but more and more often I consciously break, bend and stretch it’s perfection.

PZ:  Do you have any particular goal in mind when your start a new piece?

MP: My goal is to spit the image out of my mind. To replace it with peace and silence.

PZ: How do you know when the painting is finished?

MP: This is the easiest and most obvious moment of the creative process. I just know it. Nevertheless it is never a planned or a predictable moment. I put the brush down, pay a tribute to the painting and let it go.

PZ: Has your practice changed over time?

MP: Yes, in the past I used to create only during the day due to the reception of dyes in sunlight. Currently, I paint only at night. And it’s just about the number of stimuli from the outside. I also used to focus on fragments more than the whole. Now I think about unity of the work . Specifying fragments is only a desire to emphasize the composition of the painting.I also was looking for inspiration  outside: in sculpture, nature, the art of others. Today I am looking for  it inside me, because it is most complete and true.

PZ: Which artists are you most influenced by?

MP: I am influenced by artists that I can get most powerful lessons from- Turner, Delacroix, Rubens.

PZ: How would you define art?

MP: You will find my definition of art in Hypnagogic Art Manifesto:

HYPNAGOGIC ART MANIFESTO ART SHOULD AFFECT,  SCRATCH THE MARROW OF EMOTIONS REVEAL THE CROWD FEED WITH DISCOMFORT OF THINKING ART SHOULD BE REACTION TO THE NOISE OF NOTHINGNESS WHITE NO-DAYS CLIMATE CHANGES, PANDEMIC CHANGES WE ARE NOT THE FUTURE WE ARE ONLY THE ORBIT OF THE ESSENCE THEREFORE REVOLUTION IN ART IS ESSENTIAL, OTHERWISE WE WILL REMAIN HUMAN MUMMIES FOSSILS OF NO-FOUNDATION THE DEFINITION OF VALUE AND FREEDOM SHOULD BE CHANGED CONCEPT OF CREATION SHOULD BE RENEWED AGAINST THE VOIDNESS OF VIEWS.

I ANNOUNCE THE END OF CONTEMPORARY ARTAND A NEW ERA OF EVENTS THE ERA OF ART HYPNAGOGIC ART.

PZ: What are you working on now?

MP: Now I am finishing works on my website. My husband composes the music for each painting, it will be unique virtual gallery.

PZ: How does the pandemic influence your work and sensibility

MP: My sensibility was already strained to a breaking point, but pandemic months haven’t influenced my work or lifestyle.
